Exercise Thursday

At Epicodus, we know that the next step is finding a job. However, success depends on more than just your coding skills! Today we're dedicating in-class effort to preparing all of your job search materials so they'll be ready to go when you are!

Everyone will need a partner to complete these tasks. You'll work parallel while writing content (one partner on their own laptop, ideally) and peer review each others' work when complete. At the end of the day you will submit your cover letters and LinkedIn URLs through Epicenter. An Epicodus staff member will review them with you in the upcoming weeks.

This time has been set aside specifically to ensure your job search materials are ready to go at a moment's notice after graduating Epicodus. Make the most of it! You're just about to enter a new and exciting job market, and will want to be prepared for any opportunities as they arise.

8:00 - 8:15

Review Internship and Demo Day Information

Before we begin, take the time to carefully review the following two lessons assigned as homework last night:

  • Internship Process. This will provide you an overview of what each step of the internship process looks like, where today's work fits in with the larger picture, and what additional events and requirements are coming up next.

  • Demo Day. This outlines the Demo Day event you will participate in before the end of your internship, including all requirements.

8:15 - 9:00

Sprucing up Github

Use the guidelines from the Sprucing up Github lesson to help make your repos as easy-to-understand and navigate as possible. Begin cleaning up every repo, and ensure each has a well-formatted README explaining the project.

9:00 - 9:30

Talk with Epicodus Staff

Two members of Epicodus' staff, our Director of Career Development and Outcomes, and our Director of Employer Relations will introduce what to expect in the upcoming weeks, in preparation for your internship.

9:30 - 10:00

Continue Sprucing up Github

Continue using guidelines from the Sprucing up Github lesson to clean up and document each of your repositories.

10:00 - 11:00

Use the bullet points from the Resume and LinkedIn lesson to update your LinkedIn profile and create a professional-looking resume.

Focus first on your LinkedIn. This is what you will review in your meeting with an Epicodus staff member, and this is what we will provide internship companies.

11:00 - 12:00

After your LinkedIn profile is complete, create an updated resume. While we will only provide your LinkedIn to internship companies, you'll still want an updated resume ready to go at a moment's notice for any job opportunities that arise after your internship!

Peer Review

Trade resumes and LinkedIn profiles with your pair and provide feedback. Is everything clear? Spelled correctly? Does it appear professional? Is it in a polished and completed state that could be given to a potential employer?

12:00 - 1:00

1:00 - 1:30

Wrap Up LinkedIn & Resume

Complete any remaining work on your LinkedIn and resume before moving on to craft your cover letters, as explained below.

1:30 - 4:00

Cover Letters

Use suggestions from the Cover Letter lesson to write a cover letter to serve as a template for future cover letters. Address this letter to one of the internship companies currently posted in Epicenter. You won't know which companies you're interviewing with yet, of course, simply pick an interesting company to write a sample letter to. You'll later customize versions of this letter for each company you're interviewing with, as soon as you have your interview assignments.

Your cover letter will also be reviewed during your meeting with an Epicodus staff member. You're required to fully complete your letter before your appointment with a staff member so the reviewer may give you accurate feedback.

Peer Review

Trade cover letters with your partner and review for any spelling or grammar errors, and provide feedback. Is it clear and easy to understand? Does it provide real-world examples? Does it highlight the skills you've learned at Epicodus? Could anything be improved?

4:00 - 4:15

Mock Interview - Person 1

Refer to the questions both from the Non-technical Interview Prep and the Technical Interview to ask your pair in a mock interview.

Give honest feedback and suggestions as they answer.

4:15 - 4:45

Mock Interview - Person 2

Same as above, switch who is interviewing whom.

4:45 - 5:00

Epicenter Submissions and Miscellaneous

Finalize and submit your LinkedIn, Resume, Cover Letter, and Sign Internship Agreement assessments on Epicenter. Remember, as described in the Internship Process lesson, submission of these documents is required, and each will be reviewed just like a code review with Epicodus staff.

In Epicenter, select the internship class you’re in from the drop-down menu, and submit the materials in the same fashion as a code review. These materials must be submitted prior to your meeting with an Epicodus staff member.

In the next few days you should receive an email containing the time of your appointment with an Epicodus Career Services coordinator to review your materials.

As you wind down for the day, complete any other job-search-related tasks. This could include:

  • Brainstorming go-to answers for those notorious interview questions like "Tell me about yourself?", "Why do you want to be a developer (or work in the tech industry if not as a developer)?", "Why do you want to work at X", "Tell me about a time you were challenged?", "What's your biggest strength/weakness?".
  • Completing additional work on your cover letter, resume, Github, or LinkedIn.
  • Practicing more technical interview questions.
  • Snapping professional-looking photos of one another for LinkedIn and Github profiles.
